Good Candidates for BOTOX Cosmetic

BOTOX Cosmetic is the trade name for botulinum toxin type A produced by Allergan, Inc. It is a purified substances, derived from a bacteria. Injections of this substance blocks muscular nerve signals, which then weakens the muscle so that it can’t contract and diminishes your unwanted facial wrinkles.

If you’re concerned about early signs of facial aging and are looking for a nonsurgical treatment to soften wrinkles and fine lines, particularly in the upper face, BOTOX is one of the most effective treatments available. We offer BOTOX, along with Dysport and XEOMIN for patients who want to temporarily smooth wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions (called dynamic wrinkles). Here are a few of the most common treatment areas:

  • Crow’s feet around the outer corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
  • Transverse lines on the nose (bunny lines)

BOTOX can also be used to minimize fine lines around the mouth and vertical “bands” on the neck. The injections can also help postpone early signs of aging for patients in their 20s and early 30s by preventing the formation of dynamic wrinkles.

Dr. Diederich Discusses BOTOX Cosmetic on “Great Day St. Louis”

Listen to patients describe their excitement about the results they enjoyed after BOTOX and filler injections administered by Dr. Diederich at MidAmerica Plastic Surgery.

How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN are all made using a purified form of the botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles. Unlike dermal fillers, which add volume to etched-in lines and folds, BOTOX temporarily disables the tiny muscles which cause dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions.

BOTOX treatment usually takes about 15 minutes, with results typically appearing about 3 to 7 days after the procedure. The changes usually last between 3 to 4 months and maintenance injections can extend the duration of the improvements.

BOTOX, Dysport, or XEOMIN?

Dysport logo

Most people have heard of BOTOX, but in recent years other products have emerged on the market that offer patients options. The 3 choices are very similar, but there are some differences. The effects of Dysport, for example, may show up a little sooner than those from BOTOX injections. Some individuals or specific concerns may respond better to one product than the other. You can discuss the differences with Dr. Diederich at your consultation.

BOTOX for Excessive Sweating

The FDA has approved BOTOX for several uses, including the treatment of excessive underarm sweating, a condition called hyperhidrosis. People suffering from hyperhidrosis can sweat through multiple shirts or blouses in a day, causing them to be self-conscious in social or professional settings. BOTOX injections temporarily disable the sweat glands in the underarm area. Talk to Dr. Diederich if you’re interested in treating hyperhidrosis.

One of the reasons for the popularity of BOTOX injections is that you can return to work or other activities immediately after your treatment. Minor side effects, such as bruising or redness at the injection sites, resolve relatively quickly. You may also experience a headache or nausea, but these symptoms are rare and typically minor. We recommend that you don’t lie down for at least 4 hours after the treatment, avoid massaging the treatment area, and postpone strenuous exercising for 48 hours.
