Anti-Aging Treatments For The Eyes

August is all about the eyes! The Spa offers a variety of products to treat various aspects, whether that be dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, wrinkles, hollows, droopy lids, or eyelash growth. We decided to ask our providers what their go-to products were for treating and preventing early signs of aging around the eyes. Combining SPF, retinol, and injectables were voted the best for providing immediate results for anti-aging around the eyes, while also preventing signs from worsening. Follow along with us to learn more about these products and how they can benefit you!

Protect

One of the most important factors in preventing signs of aging, specifically around the eyes, is using a daily sunscreen. Applying sunscreen to the eyes is an important step in protecting the delicate skin in that area from sun damage. While normal sunscreen is not recommended for direct application to the eyelids or the immediate area around the eyes, there are specialized sunscreens available that are specifically formulated for use around the eyes. For example, The Spa’s Tinted Eye Corrector contains SPF 50+, while also providing a tint to act as a light coverage of concealer against dark circles.

The product is applied using a metal applicator, which functions to depuff the undereye area as well. This triple acting product is gentle and less likely to irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes, compared to traditional sunscreens. You can apply this product to the eyelids and the surrounding area, being careful to keep it from getting into your eyes.

SPF around the eyes can help prevent signs of aging because it provides protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation from the sun. UV rays can accelerate the aging process of the skin, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and brown spots. By regularly applying SPF around the eyes, you can shield the area from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, reducing the risk of premature aging and maintaining a more youthful appearance.

Correct & Prevent

Another product to incorporate into your skincare regimen to prevent early signs of aging around the eyes is Retinol! Retinol can help with preventing signs of aging by offering several benefits for the skin. It is an effective topical treatment that can minimize the visible and tactile signs of aging. Ways in which retinol can contribute to the prevention of aging signs:

  1. Stimulates collagen production: Retinol can stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that helps maintain the skin’s elasticity and youthful appearance. By increasing collagen levels, retinol can improve the texture and firmness of the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  2. Accelerates skin cell turnover: Retinol increases the rate at which skin cells are renewed. This enhanced cell turnover helps to eliminate dull and damaged skin cells, revealing fresher, smoother skin with a more youthful glow.
  3. Thickens the epidermis: Retinol can thicken the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. This thickening effect can help improve the overall texture and resilience of the skin, making it less prone to fine lines and wrinkles.
  4. Evens out skin tone: Retinol has the ability to fade dark spots and patches, promoting a more even skin tone. It helps to inhibit the production of excess melanin, which can contribute to the formation of age spots and hyperpigmentation.
  5. Reverses sun-related damage: Retinol can potentially reverse sun-related photoaging, which is the damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. It can help repair and rejuvenate the skin, reducing the visible effects of sun damage such as wrinkles, fine lines, and brown spots.

Retinol should be used with caution, as it can cause skin sensitivity and irritation, especially when starting a new retinol regimen. It is recommended to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase usage, following product instructions or consulting with a dermatologist.

You might be wondering, is this safe to use around the eyes? Standard retinols, no. The amount of retinol contained in traditional retinols is too high to be used safely around the eyes. However, The Spa carries their Retinol Eye Cream, which contains a safe amount of retinol to regularly apply to the eye area. This product also contains Hyaluronic Acid, to deeply hydrate the area. Retinol + HA will help to minimize the look of dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles! The Spa’s Retinol Eye Cream can be purchased online or in the office.

Have we got your attention? Let’s take things to the next level with injections! Dysport is a neuromodulator which functions by freezing muscle movement, smoothing wrinkles and preventing existing ones from worsening. It is commonly used to treat crow’s feet, which are the wrinkles that develop on the sides of your eyes. When injected under the skin, Dysport works by relaxing the targeted muscles and reducing the appearance of these wrinkles.

The benefits of Dysport for crow’s feet can be seen both in the moment and in the long run. In the short term, Dysport can provide immediate improvement in the appearance of crow’s feet by smoothing out the wrinkles and making the area around the eyes look fresher and younger.

In the long term, Dysport can help prevent the formation of future wrinkles and lines by minimizing muscle movement in the treated area. By blocking muscle contractions, Dysport can not only smooth existing wrinkles but also prevent the deepening of these wrinkles over time. This preventive effect can help maintain a more youthful appearance around the eyes in the long run.

Dysport is administered by one of our experienced nurse injectors. At your first appointment, you can expect to have a brief consultation prior to treatment, where your provider will assess your facial movement and determine proper dosing. The treatment will take up to 14 days to fully kick in and if you are still noticing movement, our providers encourage patients to schedule a follow up appointment so they can adjust your dosing as needed. You can receive your regular Dysport treatments every 3-4 months.

If you’re wanting to get started on a good treatment plan for anti-aging around the eyes, The Spa offers complimentary consultations. Consultations provide an environment where you can discuss skincare with Madi, our aesthetician, and injectables with one of our injectors, Ashley, Ciara, or Taylor. To schedule, call the office at 618-307-6233. You may also simply fill out one of our contact forms and our patient care coordinator will reach out to you.
