Benefits of Vitamin C

Did you know that vitamin C offers benefits that go beyond keeping our inner bodies healthy? Vitamin C has also made a name for itself in the world of skincare over the last several years, and for a good reason. As a powerful anti-aging ingredient, vitamin C is packed with the nutrients needed to create a smooth, even skin complexion. If vitamin C is not a part of your current skincare regimen, we urge you to add it. Here’s why:

Anti-Aging

Did you know that vitamin C is needed to create collagen? Vitamin C is a vital part of what scientists call “collagen synthesis”. According to an article by Science Direct, vitamin C is an “essential cofactor for the two enzymes required for collagen synthesis: prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase.” Although collagen is a naturally occurring protein, we lose it over time. When collagen levels lower, fine lines and wrinkles can appear.

Hyperpigmentation

Frustrated by pesky brown spots or acne scars on your face? Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties help to promote the production of the enzyme tyrosinase, which promotes melanin production. This helps to fade dark spots, but won’t affect your natural skin coloration.

Redness

Vitamin C also serves as an anti-inflammatory, meaning that it can help support a variety of inflammatory conditions such as rosacea or eczema that may cause redness. The nutrients found in vitamin C help support weakened blood vessels.

Hydration

A derivative of vitamin C, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, has been linked to hydrating effects on the skin. The decrease in transepidermal water loss allows the skin to retain moisture better.

Sun Protection

Vitamin C helps protect the skin from harmful free radicals, the cause of sun damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules known to damage cells, which results in skin aging. As an antioxidant, vitamin C offers protection and acts as a barrier to the skin’s healthy cells.

Our medical spa offers a variety of vitamin C products for our patients to choose from to add to their skincare routine. Our team favorites include SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, Phloretin CF Gel, Silymarin CF, and CE Ferulic.
