Liposuction
Request Your ConsultationWhat is liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure from MidAmerica Plastic Surgery that removes excess fat deposits from targeted areas of the body to improve its shape and proportions. Liposuction is especially good for people from Maryville, Edwardsville, and metro St. Louis who have stubborn areas of fat that won’t go away despite diet and exercise.

Can guys get liposuction?
Dr. Ryan Diederich frequently performs liposuction for male patients. Their areas of concern often include:
- Double chin
- Chest (man boobs)
- Upper back
- Flanks (love handles)
- Belly
Dr. Diederich takes special care to enhance his male patients’ musculature and sculpt contours that enhance their masculinity.
How is liposuction completed?
Before the procedure, the areas of liposuction are marked as a guide to plan the appropriate treatment. Liposuction is able to specifically target areas that you want treated. Medication is infiltrated in the target area through very small access points and is completed with minimal to no scarring. Some men and women may be good candidates for CoolSculpting®, a nonsurgical fat reduction treatment that produces less dramatic results than liposuction but requires no downtime.
Liposuction can be completed as an in-office procedure or in the operating room depending on each patient’s needs.
How long for results?
Your results will slowly become apparent as the swelling and fluid retention reside. It can take a few months or up to one year for the swelling to fully resolve. With continued practices of healthy diet and fitness, the fatty tissue should be permanently removed.
Complications Regarding Liposuction
As with any procedure, there are risks. Fortunately, with Liposuction, these risks are minimal. These include but are not limited to:
- Uneven contours
- Rippling or loose skin
- Skin or nerve damage
- Irregular pigmentation
- Infection
- Fat clots
- Blood clots
- Excessive fluid loss or fluid accumulation
- Unfavorable scarring
- Thermal burn or heat injury from ultrasound with the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty technique
- Anesthesia risks
- Bleeding (hematoma)
- Change in skin sensation
- Skin discoloration or swelling
- Asymmetry
- Pain, which may persist
- Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs
- Poor wound healing
- Persistent swelling in the legs
- Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
- Possibility of revisional surgery
