Everything You Need to Know About Lip Filler

It’s no surprise that lip filler has become one of our most requested treatments at MidAmerica Medical Spa. This popular procedure helps enhance the lips by restoring volume, improving symmetry, and creating a beautifully hydrated appearance.

Below, we’re breaking down the process and answering some of the most common questions our providers hear about lip filler, so you know exactly what to expect before your appointment.

What Is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is an injectable treatment designed to add immediate volume and structure to the lips. It’s made from hyaluronic acid (H.A.), a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and promote smoothness.

Because H.A. already exists within your body, it’s considered very safe when injected properly by a trained provider. Hyaluronic acid also helps attract hydration to the area, giving the lips a softer, more supple appearance.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

Since hyaluronic acid is naturally broken down over time, filler results are temporary but long-lasting. Depending on the product used and your body’s metabolism, lip filler typically lasts about 6–12 months, with most patients seeing an average of 6 months before considering a touch-up.

Does Lip Filler Hurt?

We make comfort a top priority. Before your treatment, a prescription-strength numbing gel is applied for 10–15 minutes to minimize discomfort. Additionally, most fillers already contain lidocaine, which continues to numb the area as your treatment progresses.

Our providers also use a small vibrating distraction tool that helps shift your focus away from the injection site — making the process even more comfortable.

How Long Does Swelling Last?

Mild swelling is completely normal and typically subsides within 2–3 days, though every patient’s experience is unique. Slight bruising is possible due to the sensitivity of the area.

We recommend avoiding major plans, photoshoots, or events immediately following your treatment. If it’s your first time, give yourself a two- to three-week window before any big occasion to ensure everything settles beautifully.

Pro tip: If you do notice minor bruising, swipe on your favorite lipstick and voilà — what bruise?

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is a quick, non-filler treatment that uses Botox or Dysport injected just above the upper lip. This relaxes the muscle around the mouth, allowing more of the pink lip to show and subtly flipping the edge outward.

It’s a great option for patients with a gummy smile or a thinner upper lip who want a softer, more defined appearance without additional volume.
