One of the most common questions we hear at our Illinois plastic surgery practice is: “What should I wear on the day of my procedure?” While it may seem like a small detail, wearing the right clothing can significantly impact your comfort during recovery.
What to Wear to Your Plastic Surgery Procedure
- Loose, Comfortable Clothing
Choose soft, loose-fitting clothes that are easy to put on and take off. A zip-up hoodie or button-down shirt is ideal—especially if you’re having breast surgery, facial surgery, or brachioplasty—so you won’t have to lift your arms or pull anything over your head. - Easy-On Sweatpants or Lounge Pants
Go for relaxed sweatpants or pajama-style pants. These won’t interfere with any post-op dressings or compression garments and will keep pressure off the surgical area, especially following tummy tuck or liposuction procedures. - Warm, Non-Slip Socks
Operating rooms can be cold. Wear a pair of warm, fuzzy socks with good grip to stay cozy and stable when walking post-procedure. - Slide-On Shoes
Avoid anything with laces or buckles. Slip-on shoes or slides are perfect since you may not be able to bend over easily after your procedure.
What Not to Wear on Surgery Day
No Jewelry
Remove all jewelry, including rings, necklaces, earrings, and piercings. If you cannot remove a piece, be sure to inform your pre-op nurse in advance.
No Makeup, Lotion, or Skincare Products
Take a day off from your beauty routine. Come with a clean face and body. Avoid:
- Makeup
- Hair products
- Moisturizer or lotion
- Perfume or deodorant
No Nail Polish
Your fingers and toes must be free of nail polish, gels, or acrylics so your care team can monitor your circulation.
Final Tip
Even if you're nervous or rushing, taking a few minutes to prepare the right outfit will help your plastic surgery recovery go smoothly. If you have questions about what to bring or wear, don’t hesitate to call our Glen Carbon plastic surgery office before your procedure.
