The Evolution of Breast Implants

There has been a significant improvement in breast augmentation over the last 20+ years. During this timeframe, breast implants have become the most studied medical device. With that data, we continue to improve implant technology and procedural techniques, making breast augmentation at my St. Louis-area plastic surgery practice a better experience than ever.

As we look back at the history of breast augmentation, from first-generation silicone implants to the implementation of saline implants to the latest generation of breast implants, the technology progression has been astounding. We now have more choices than ever before to provide the patient with a customized, safe method of breast augmentation.

Visualizing Results

In the past, breast augmentation was little more than placing some form of a breast implant under the breast. These results were acceptable; however, those days are over. Today, the degree of planning using a volumetric and 360-degree approach has revolutionized outcomes. We are able to use 3-D imaging to identify subtleties and show these to patients like never before through methods such as Vectra® 3-D by Canfield Scientific or Crisalix. This is a huge part of the consultation process. Learn more about 3-D imaging in this blog post.

Minimizing Risks

Products such as the Keller Funnel allow us to limit implant contact and decrease the risk of adverse events. Implant technology now provides more breast implant options than ever before, including options for implant shape, widths, projections, fill material, and more.

We continue to research concerns with implants including ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma) and breast implant associated illness. Using this research, we continue to develop technology and best practices to exceed expectations in the safest possible manner.

360° Breast Augmentation

In the last 12 months, the concept of 360° breast augmentation has really come to the forefront in my eyes. We’ve done a great job of producing natural results with breast augmentation given the constraints of the implants. Now, by using multiple modalities and methods we are able to take this 1 step further. This includes methods such as the use of fat grafting to improve the contours, mesh support of implants (through various products such as galaflex), and the addition of liposuction or CoolSculpting® to truly address the breast as a 360° part of the body and create amazing outcomes. See the results for yourself in our before-and-after photo gallery.

For me, this approach has become a routine part of the consultation process. I’m proud to be a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Continuing education and exceeding expectations is my mission, and MidAmerica Plastic Surgery takes this very seriously.
